Where to Hang — Fence, Deck, Pergola, Trees, Eaves
Fence — easiest way. Run the lights along the top. Use zip ties every 20–30 inches. I used black ones and you can’t even see them during the day.
Deck — attach to the railing, same method, zip ties. If your deck has a roof, hang them from the underside of the roof edge.
Pergola — this is where it looks best. Zig-zag the lights back and forth across the beams. Just wrap the copper wire directly around the wood — no extra hardware needed.

Trees — wrap around the trunk and main branches. Don’t pull too tight — leave the tree room to grow. Eaves — use clips along the metal or plastic gutter edge, spaced about 12–16 inches apart.
Different spots need different lengths. Fence needs about 33 feet. Deck needs about 66 feet. Pergola depends on how many beams — usually 33–66 feet.

Wind is the #1 killer of outdoor string lights. Here’s what survived real storms. Use zip ties, not tape. Tape lasts maybe 48 hours outside. UV rays break down the glue and wind does the rest. Zip ties hold all season. Secure every 24 inches. Any looser and the middle section flaps around — wires fatigue and snap over time. Any tighter and you’re wasting time.
Leave some slack. Don’t pull them like a tightrope. Leave about an inch of give so they can flex when the wind hits instead of fighting it. Waterproof the connections. This is where they always fail. Wrap the joints with waterproof tape or heat shrink tubing. I skipped this the first time — the connection rusted after one rainstorm. Wrapped them after that and they survived everything.
